Fat Kid Fridays, February 14th Edition

The week’s most ridiculous eats, ranked by calorie count

by Liz Childers, Fri Feb 14, 2014

Not content to crush it in the BBQ arena, Cali Comfort goes buckwild with mac and cheese. Slab bacon, creamy cheese, pasta… these are a few of our favorite things. And that totally unnecessary, absolutely-appreciated scoop of sour cream makes this even tastier than that Easy Mac you ate every night in college after you lost one too many games of beer pong.

Cali Comfort is more than great BBQ, it is about family and community

What began as a family vacation home in the 70s, is now one of Spring Valley’s best known friendly neighborhood family restaurant and bars

by Albert H. Fulcher, Tue July 02, 2013

Cali Comfort BBQOwned and operated by brothers Shawn Walchef and Thomas House, along with Walchef’s wife Rositsa Walchef, Calif Comfort, a family owned business with Walchef in charge of operations and House—the low-n-slow pit master. Despite a recession, Cali Comfort BBQ and Sports Bar continues to grow, has 36 employees, is expanding its services and working towards manufacturing its sauces and rubs.

Working with local sports teams helping kids stay off the streets and involved in organized sports, got them involved with a BBQ competition. The first year was a small event with a couple of local people. The following year Walchef went to the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce and told them to let him turn this into a larger event, making it something for Spring Valley, so that it has its own festival. Heading into its fourth annual festival on October 20, he said the event brought 5,000 people last year.

Taking up the challenge at Cali Comfort BBQ

Eat six ghost pepper wings, get a new T-shirt and maybe an ulcer or two

By , April 11, 2013

San Miguel Fire Fighters wingLooking at it now, you may have to squint a little to envision the Spring Valley home that Bulgarian-farm-boy-cum-doctor Luben Walchef bought in 1972 and converted into a family restaurant about ten years later. The eatery went through a handful of owners before Luben’s grandson, Shawn Walchef, and friend Corey Robinson took over in 2008. The co-owners renovated the building and converted it into a BBQ pit and sports bar spackled with flat screen TVs.

The San Miguel Fire Fighters wing challenge may not seem like much. At $12.99, you get 6 wings to be eaten in 10 minutes with no sips of liquid. Sounds easy, right? The ghost pepper, also known as Bhut Jolokia, was formerly recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world. It’s so hot, in fact, that you have to sign a waiver before taking up the challenge.

Cali Comfort wins Top 5 Sandwich in San Diego with their Chris Ello’s Pulled Pork Sandwich!

Results of Project Sandwich 2013, one food writer’s quest for carb-and-meat excellence!

Chris Ello's Pulled Pork Sandwich

Bring this $9.99 sandwich to your face and 6 ounces of pulled pork will attempt a potato-bun break. Chase those sweet pork slivers, some crisped-to-mellow bacon after 12 hours in that hickory smoker out front. Even without the luscious barbecue sauce in a side container, this sandwich, named after a local sports radio host, performs admirably. Any foodie with an appreciation for cured, smoked pork butt will appreciate its salt-foward seasoning. From racks of ribs to tri tip and brisket, Cali BBQ caters. And as a sports bar, it expects a full house Sunday.

BBQ Enthusiasts Tour Cali Comfort, Coop’s As Part of National BBQ Association Conference

The two East County restaurants were among the five restaurants in San Diego County included on the exclusive tour

Cali's Famous Tri-Tip SandwichAbout 100 barbecue experts, enthusiasts and restaurant owners got a taste of how East County holds its own in the barbecue world, as in Spring Valley and in Lemon Grove were two of five San Diego area restaurants selected as part of a presigious BBQ tasting tour Wednesday afternoon.

Cali Comfort was able to get on the tour thanks to its relationship with longtime BBQ expert Gene Goycochea, vice president of the NBBQA.

“Gene has been great for us,” said Cali Comfort owner Shawn Walchef. “His expertise and teaching about proper methods and ingredients has really helped or BBQ plates become popular.  We’ve been selling so many tri-tip sandwiches and plates, and pulled pork. They’ve almost become the leading items we sell.”

Dianne Jacob Talks Openly with Public

Supervisor Dianne Jacob met face-to-face with a group of her constituents in Spring Valley Thursday, discussing the state of the county, and some critical issues affecting the lives of those in attendance.

The event, known as “Coffee With Constituents,” is just that, a chance for people to share a cup o’ joe with Jacob, bringing their concerns and asking questions.

The first issue discussed was that of the proposed CAL Fire takeover of the San Miguel Fire District. Capt. Joe Manelli, attending the event on behalf of the district, was allowed to speak. He said that the two sides are still negotiating a contract. Once that is done, it will go before the board, and the public will have a chance to voice their questions, opinions, and concerns. Manelli said that he expects a contract to be done by the end of the year.
